Jarrod glanced at the caller ID. It was his executive assistant, Arthur Bishop.
Arthur rarely called him at this hour unless it was an emergency.
Jarrod answered the call.
Listening to Arthur’s report, Jarrod’s brow furrowed slightly. “I understand,” he said, before hanging up.
Noticing his sudden shift in demeanor, Stella couldn’t help but ask, “What happened?”
Jarrod checked the time. “There’s a situation at the corporation. I need to head over immediately. I won’t have time to grab dinner with you tonight.”
Stella nodded, flashing him an understanding look. “Work comes first. Go on ahead. I can just grab a cab home.”
She asked the driver to pull over. Before stepping out, she offered Jarrod a word of advice: “Don’t work too late. Try to get some rest.”
But Jarrod caught her hand, a reluctance evident in his gaze. “Stella, I haven’t seen you in so long, and now I have to leave. If things wrap up early at the office, can I come find you so we can talk?”
Stella’s first instinct was to decline, but seeing the exhaustion in his eyes mixed with that hopeful anticipation, she finally nodded.
The moment she agreed, Jarrod’s eyes noticeably brightened.
Stella was momentarily left speechless.
Back at her apartment, Stella hopped on a video call with Summer Rhodes to catch up.
Summer had already joined her mentor’s architectural project. Although she hadn’t worked in her primary field for a few years, she occasionally took on design gigs, so her skills were still sharp. She adapted to the new job quickly.
Doing work she actually enjoyed had put Summer in a fantastic mood. She spoke to Stella with her usual gentle grace, looking as if the breakup hadn’t affected her at all.
Stella had debated asking about Lucca Sterling, but since Summer didn’t bring him up, Stella naturally kept her mouth shut to avoid dredging up bad memories.
