Stella shot a quick glance at Uncle Silas, who was casually feeding a parrot nearby, and smiled, assuring Jarrod she was fine.
She was genuinely fine, but Uncle Silas had just dropped those highly suggestive, almost manipulative comments. Now, being trapped in the same room with him felt more than a little suffocating.
Jarrod cast a sharp look at his uncle, his tone entirely unreadable. “Uncle Silas, you didn’t happen to say anything inappropriate to my wife and upset her, did you?”
Hearing this, Silas turned his head, a scolding smile on his face. “You brat. Even if you’re the future head of the Fuller family, you can’t be this disrespectful to your own uncle, can you? What could I possibly say to Stella?”
Jarrod let out a low, cold chuckle. “If you didn’t say anything, that’s perfect. Moving forward, try to keep my personal life out of your casual gossip. Especially the completely fabricated stories.”
Silas tossed the last of the birdseed into the cage, dusted off his hands, and strolled over to them.
“Jarrod, you’re implying something here. Who exactly am I supposedly gossiping about?”
Jarrod maintained his icy composure. “When Yvette and I were younger, we interacted a bit, but it was strictly platonic. How exactly did it morph in your mouth into us being inseparable? To the point where you claimed my nanny had to resign over it?”
Jarrod intentionally omitted Serena’s involvement, fully aware that Silas would immediately grasp the warning just from those details.
Sure enough, Silas paused for a split second before breaking into a wide, easy grin. “Oh, that’s what this is about! One of your distant cousins called and casually asked about the nanny who used to take care of you, so I just chatted with him for a bit.”
“But it’s not entirely fabricated, is it? Your nanny resigned precisely because she was terrified Yvette was getting ideas about you, and she wanted to avoid a complete disaster.”
Jarrod sneered in absolute disgust at his uncle’s blatant lie. He remembered perfectly well that the nanny had retired due to failing health, which had absolutely nothing to do with Yvette.
“Oh, right! I was just giving Stella a little friendly advice to stay sharp so other women don’t start messing with your marriage,” Silas added with a cheerful chuckle. “Stella has total faith in you, though. She said you know how to maintain proper boundaries.”
Stella was utterly stunned that Silas had the nerve to lay his manipulative words bare right in front of Jarrod.
