Serena’s hands were shaking so violently that she couldn’t even grasp the phone. She shook her head, indicating not to call her parents, and asked Stella to call Jarrod instead.
“My parents are abroad for business. Just get Jarrod here…”
The wail of sirens was practically on top of them now, and several bystanders were already rushing over to help.
Stella breathed a small sigh of relief. She set the fire extinguisher down, dialed Jarrod’s number, and gave him a brief rundown of what had happened.
Jarrod promised he would be there right away, then urgently asked, “Are you hurt?”
Stella paused for a second. “I’m fine.”
By the time she hung up, the police had arrived, accompanied by the restaurant’s staff.
After Stella gave a quick recount of the events, the officers helped Serena and Chloe to their feet, and they all headed to the station to give their statements.
The two thugs who had taken a face full of fire extinguisher dust were hauled into a separate squad car.
During the ride, Serena’s panic began to subside, though she couldn’t stop the tears from spilling over. Chloe, on the other hand, didn’t cry. Her face was deathly pale, and whenever she glanced at Stella, her expression was a complicated mix of emotions.
“Do you need to call your family or your brother?” Stella asked.
“No,” Chloe replied quickly. She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say more, but after a moment’s hesitation, she stayed quiet.
Seeing this, Stella didn’t push the issue. Even though Jarrod and Sebastian had fallen out, Jarrod wouldn’t just leave Chloe stranded.
Once they reached the station, they were separated to give their statements.
By the time they walked out, Jarrod was already there.
“Jarrod…” Seeing him, Serena immediately broke down into tears again.
“Jarrod.”
