Serena waved her hands frantically. “I had no idea she was going to be there! Besides, you’re always defending her so fiercely. The most I ever did was complain about her to Chloe. I’d never actually try to hurt her! Right, Chloe?”
Hearing Serena’s defense, Jarrod finally shifted his gaze to Chloe.
Chloe looked like a peacock stripped of its vibrant feathers, radiating an air of complete defeat. “Serena is telling the truth. We really didn’t know.”
Both Serena and Chloe could be spoiled and arrogant, entirely capable of using their status to bully others, but neither possessed the calculating malice required to actually orchestrate something so heinous.
Jarrod accepted their story for now.
“Are you two hurt?” he asked.
Finally receiving the concern she had been desperately waiting for, Chloe’s tears spilled over in silence. Serena explained that the thugs had grabbed their hair, dragged them, and bruised their wrists badly.
“Arthur will handle the police and the fallout. Let’s get you two to the hospital first,” Jarrod said, grabbing Stella’s hand.
Before Stella could even process what was happening, he was already leading her outside.
Serena hurriedly latched onto Jarrod’s other arm. “Jarrod, slow down!”
Left behind, Chloe watched their retreating figures, a profound sense of defeat washing over her.
“Chloe, come on! Keep up!” Serena called back, noticing Chloe hadn’t moved.
Chloe lowered her head in despair. “I’m not hurt. I don’t need to go to the hospital.”
“How can you not be hurt? Stop trying to act tough, Chloe. Let’s go to the hospital together!” Serena urged.
Chloe stayed rooted to the spot, completely silent.
Jarrod was about to say something when he seemed to remember something else. He turned to look at Stella, as if silently asking for her opinion.
Stella was speechless.
