Hannah never called her directly unless it was an absolute emergency. Had something happened to Grandma?
Stella snatched up the phone, her voice tight with panic. “Hannah, is Grandma okay?”
Hannah sounded frantic. She quickly explained that George had just shown up and forcibly taken Grandma away.
“Stella, George said he’s relocating her to Royal Oaks for a while. He told me to pack my things and follow them immediately.”
“Your grandmother and I were perfectly fine out here in the suburbs,” Hannah fretted. “I have no idea how she’s going to handle such a massive change in environment. But I couldn’t stop him. I didn’t know what else to do, so I called you.”
Stella’s blood boiled, a searing wave of fury rushing straight to her head.
She had assumed George’s threats to use Grandma as a pawn were just bluffs. She never imagined he would actually ambush the house and abduct her!
After quickly assuring Hannah that she would handle it, Stella hung up and immediately dialed George’s number.
It rang endlessly before George finally answered, his tone dripping with impatience. “What is it?”
Stella fought to keep her voice from shaking with rage. “Grandma and Hannah were perfectly safe in the suburbs. Why did you suddenly drag her away? What exactly is your game here?”
“Stella, watch your tone!”
George was clearly infuriated by her lack of respect. “I brought my mother-in-law to the city to live with us. Is that a crime? Besides, didn’t you constantly complain about wanting to see her more?”
Stella desperately wanted to see her grandmother, yes. But her doctors had strictly emphasized that keeping Margaret in a familiar, quiet environment was critical for her mental stability. That was exactly why she had lived peacefully in the suburbs with Hannah for years.
