When her alarm finally shattered the dream, Stella sat in bed for a long time, struggling to pull herself back to reality.
Brushing a stray tear from her cheek, she made a silent vow. She would never give up on Logan, she would fight to protect the love they once shared.
Even knowing he had blocked her number, she pulled out her phone and sent a simple “Happy Birthday” text.
Then, she opened the messaging app he had abandoned three years ago and sent another message: *Lolo, I won’t break my promise. I hope you won’t either.*
Just as she was about to lock her screen, she noticed an unread message.
From Jarrod.
Sent at midnight.
*Something came up out of state. I won’t make it to the opening ceremony tomorrow.*
Stella stared at the screen, thoroughly confused. Had he texted the wrong person?
But there was no name attached, and no follow-up text correcting a mistake. It seemed intentional.
When she had been at his office two days ago, she had overheard Arthur Bishop mentioning an urgent crisis out of town that required his immediate presence.
He was supposed to fly out that same night.
So Jarrod was still out of state and couldn’t make it to the summit in time?
But why on earth was he updating her on his schedule?
They certainly weren’t close enough to be checking in with each other.
Regardless, since he had texted her, it was only polite to reply.
