Stella’s grip on the glass tightened, a sudden wave of panic washing over her.
“What is it?” she asked.
Jarrod’s dark eyes flickered with a painful struggle. After a long, suffocating silence, he spoke. “We didn’t go to the courthouse last time, so the lawyer rescheduled. Tomorrow morning, ten o’clock.”
Jarrod didn’t specify what the appointment was for, but Stella immediately understood. He was talking about the divorce proceedings they had initiated earlier.
The lawyer had originally booked a court date, but Jarrod had used work as an excuse to miss it.
After that, he had confessed his feelings to her, and she had decided to give their marriage a real chance.
Stella had assumed Jarrod had long since ordered the lawyer to cancel the divorce filing.
She never expected him to bring it up again, especially not now.
Looking back, she realized Jarrod had been acting strange ever since they left the hospital.
Instead of exploding in shock or rage, Stella calmly asked, “What’s the reason?”
Jarrod looked away. He pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and placed one between his fingers.
His voice sounded incredibly exhausted. “You probably saw the news this afternoon. I intentionally had those photos leaked. I’ve decided to be with Yvette.”
His excuse was riddled with massive holes. Stella cut straight to the point: “I don’t believe you would suddenly make a decision like that.”
“Jarrod, are you trying to force a divorce to protect me because you’re terrified Silas is going to keep trying to kill me?”
