Hearing the question, Serena froze, clearly caught off guard by Jarrod’s sudden interrogation.
“Cat got your tongue?” Jarrod asked coldly.
Serena quickly caught on that Jarrod was confronting her on Stella’s behalf.
“Jarrod, I just happened to overhear Uncle Silas mentioning it to someone on the phone one day when I went to see him,” Serena answered guiltily.
Hearing Uncle Silas’s name, Jarrod’s brow furrowed slightly. “Who was Uncle Silas talking to, and how did my name and Yvette’s come up?”
Serena sounded meek. “I don’t know. He was on the phone, talking about how you used to be very close with the nanny’s daughter and cared about her a lot. Even the nanny noticed. To avoid any trouble, the nanny supposedly quit and took her daughter back to their hometown.”
“And then?” Jarrod pressed.
Serena sounded even guiltier. “There is no ‘and then’. Uncle Silas noticed me, so he didn’t elaborate and hung up the phone.”
“So exactly which part of that implies I had feelings for Yvette?” Jarrod’s voice turned sharply stern.
Serena hesitated in shock before crying out miserably, “Jarrod, I was wrong. At the time, I really hated Stella. I was annoyed that she kept refusing to divorce you, and when I heard you were running around handling things for her grandmother, I got petty. I went to the hospital to confront her and just spun the story based on my own assumptions…”
Simply put, Serena’s entire explanation amounted to her admitting she had wildly exaggerated the facts.
Stella found herself momentarily speechless.
