It was the middle of the night, and he had just gotten home, only to turn right back around and leave again.

Summer lay perfectly still in the dark, her face devoid of any emotion, the absolute last shred of warmth in her heart finally freezing over completely.
In truth, from the very first time Lucca lied to cover up his involvement with Aria, she should have known this relationship was thoroughly rotting from the inside out.
She had just been desperately clinging to hope, foolishly believing that after all their years together, Lucca could never actually cross that line.
But with the brutal reality shoved in her face over and over again, there was absolutely nothing left to hold onto.
Summer stayed awake the entire night, staring at the ceiling until dawn broke.
Just as she was about to get out of bed, her phone buzzed with a text.
It was from Lucca.
[Morning. Something came up at the office, so I had to head in early. I didn’t want to wake you. Let me know what you want for breakfast, and I’ll have someone drop it off. Text me when you’re up.]
Staring at his flawlessly feigned concern, Summer’s lips curled into a bitter sneer. Lucca really was the ultimate master of time management—spending the night comforting his mistress and still making sure to send his “fiancée” a sweet good-morning text.
Without bothering to reply, Summer began packing away all her personal belongings. Lucca had bought this apartment for her, and she had no intention of keeping it.
Since she was leaving the country tomorrow, she had scheduled a farewell lunch with Stella.
Stella had eagerly agreed.
They met at their favorite restaurant downtown. Stella arrived first and excitedly waved Summer over the moment she walked in.
