Stella didn’t answer.
She had already said everything that needed to be said. Jarrod was probably only asking because his pride was bruised, but she had absolutely no energy left to humor him.
Instead, she simply closed her eyes and rested her head.
Watching her reaction, a suffocating tightness gripped Jarrod’s chest. He didn’t ask anything else and tightly shut his own eyes as well.
A short while later, the driver pulled up to Stella’s apartment building.
Once the car came to a complete stop, Stella murmured a polite “thank you” and reached for the door handle. But before she could open it, Jarrod’s hand clamped around her wrist.
His palm was scorching, the heat seeping instantly through her skin.
Stella looked back at him. “Is there something else?”
Jarrod’s dark eyes shifted slightly. After a pause, he said, “I’m planning to keep The Sterling Residences. Since you’re going to list it for sale anyway, I’ll just pay you the market value in cash.”
Stella had wanted to tell him that he didn’t need to pay her out, that he could just keep the house. But she knew Jarrod would never accept that. She nodded instead. “Alright, whatever works for you.”
The conversation was over, yet his hand remained securely wrapped around her wrist.
Stella glanced at her arm, then back up at Jarrod.
Slowly, as if entirely unbothered, Jarrod released her and leaned back into his resting position.
“I’m heading up,” Stella said.
She stepped out of the car and walked into the building.
Shortly after walking through her front door, her phone buzzed with a text from Sebastian asking if she had made it home safely.
Stella replied with a brief, *[I’m home.]*
Sebastian’s chat bubble showed he was typing for quite a while before a simple *[Get some rest]* finally came through.
