Hearing a knock at the door, Stella pulled it open, only to find Jarrod standing on her threshold.
He was dressed far more casually than usual, wearing a relaxed cardigan over his crisp button-down shirt. The outfit made him look more approachable, but his expression was anything but.
He looked cold and deeply annoyed, as if someone had seriously pissed him off.
Stella blinked in surprise and asked, “What are you doing here?”
Staring her down, he replied in a flat, emotionless tone. “I left my watch here. I came to get it back.”
He really had left his watch at her place, but given the sheer awkwardness of that night, she hadn’t taken the initiative to contact him about it.
He owned a dozen high-end watches anyway. She had figured she would just bring it along the next time she went to The Sterling Residences to pack up the rest of her things.
She never expected him to make a special trip just for that.
“Give me a second. I’ll go grab it,” she said.
With that, she turned and headed into the living room.
But when she retrieved the watch and turned back, she realized he had already let himself inside.
Deep down, she had a sneaking suspicion that he hadn’t shown up at this hour just for a forgotten accessory.
Still, since he was already standing in her apartment, it felt too rude to just kick him out.
So, she offered politely, “Do you want some water?”
Without a word, he strode over and sat on her sofa.

Stella set the watch down and poured him a glass of water anyway.
He didn’t take the glass. Instead, his gaze fixated intensely on her ring finger.
Confused, she followed his line of sight and realized she was still wearing the simple silver band he had given her.
It wasn’t particularly expensive, and she had worn it for so long that she had simply forgotten to take it off when she returned all the other jewelry.
