Lost in thought, Stella was guided back to the living room by the maid.
Edward’s family was nowhere to be seen.
“Jasper’s uncle dropped by, so Edward and the others went home,” Silas explained with a smile.
Stella nodded distractedly and sank into a chair.
“Don’t worry. The old man might lose his temper, but he loves Jarrod deeply. He won’t actually hurt him.”
Noticing her anxiety, Silas offered a reassuring chuckle.
Silas was generally easygoing, so Stella decided to ask, “Silas, why is Grandpa so unusually strict with Jarrod?”
Silas let out a soft laugh, a faint trace of mockery lacing his tone.
“When the son you place all your hopes in completely ruins himself, you pin all your dreams on the grandson. Naturally, he can’t afford to let him take a single wrong step.”
The “son” Silas mentioned likely referred to Jarrod’s father.
Though Stella had been married into the family for three years, she didn’t know much about the Fullers’ dark history.
All she knew was that after his wife passed away, Jarrod’s father fell severely ill, ultimately abandoning his duties and vanishing from their lives when Jarrod was just a child. He never returned.
Hardly anyone in the house ever brought him up.
Jarrod had been raised by his grandfather, which should have meant he was doted on, but all Stella had ever witnessed was relentless severity.
He wasn’t allowed a single misstep at the company, and he didn’t even have a say in his own marriage.
When Arthur Sr. chose Stella to be his granddaughter-in-law, it wasn’t out of affection. It was because her family lacked influence, making her easy to control.
Over the past three years, Grandpa hadn’t been particularly warm to her, but he hadn’t mistreated her either. During the holidays, she received the exact same treatment as his biological grandchildren.
Given the old man’s personality, he would have treated any granddaughter-in-law the exact same way.
Their divorce wasn’t exactly a shock, so why was he this furious?
Was it simply because Jarrod had made the decision without his permission?
