Seeing her absolute desolation, Simeon tried to pull her into a hug to offer comfort, but Stella took a definitive step back, rejecting the gesture entirely.
Simeon had already been brought up to speed on what Sylvia and Seraphina had done to the company and their father. He realized, with crushing clarity, exactly how much hell his sister had endured over the years. Simeon felt a suffocating wave of despair, as if his chest were being hollowed out.
When they were children, she had been a bright, affectionate little girl who adored him. Whenever he came home from school, she would reach her tiny arms up, begging to be held, kissing his cheek, and declaring him her favorite person in the world.
Now, Stella’s face was an impenetrable mask of ice. The light in her eyes had completely died, and she looked at him as if he were nothing more than a stranger on the street.
Simeon’s chest seized with a physical ache, yet he was utterly powerless to fix any of it. All he could do was stand there, eyes bloodshot, muttering broken apologies.
“I’m going to find Sylvia and Seraphina. I’ll make them pay for this!” Simeon roared, turning toward the door.
Stella finally broke her silence. “What exactly is that going to accomplish? If you want to get back at them, find a way to secure The Quinn Estate and whatever is left of Dad’s assets. And you need to handle the funeral arrangements.”
Simeon nodded frantically, swearing to step up and fulfill his duties as the eldest son.
Seeing her swaying slightly on her feet, he begged her to go home and get some sleep.
