“Jarrod’s uncle Edward tried to fight it at the board meeting, but it was completely useless. Silas immediately reassigned him to oversee a project overseas just to get him out of the picture.”
Eleanor’s voice cracked with panic. “Stella, I’ve had a bad feeling about Jarrod lately. Whenever I ask him, he just brushes it off and tells me not to worry. How am I supposed to not worry? Silas is acting like a rabid dog, sinking his teeth into Jarrod and refusing to let go. I’m terrified something worse is going to happen!”
Stella did her best to soothe the older woman, though there was little else she could offer.
After hanging up, Stella debated with herself before finally sending Jarrod a text, asking what was going on and why he had been suspended.
It took a long time for him to reply, and the response was ice-cold: [I’m fine.]
That didn’t sound fine at all.
It rang a few times before Yvette answered. “Stella? Do you need something from Jarrod? He’s in the shower right now. It’s not really a good time.”
Stella checked the clock. It was barely eight in the evening. Jarrod was showering and turning in for the night this early?
More importantly, why did Yvette have his phone?
“He just walked out. I’ll hand it to him.”
Before Stella could unravel the implications, Jarrod’s voice came through the receiver. “What do you want?”
His tone was entirely flat, devoid of any discernible emotion, much like his usual self.
Stella explained that Eleanor had called and asked if his suspension was Silas’s doing.
“Stella,” Jarrod interrupted, his voice dripping with exhaustion, “this is none of your business. Focus on your own problems. We’re divorced. Stay out of my life.”
Before she could say another word, he hung up.
