Jarrod crushed his cigarette, his voice rasping from the smoke. “Stella, I know this is impossible to accept, and it kills me to say it. If I had a choice, I would never divorce you. But Yvette almost lost her baby trying to save your life. If only to repay her, I have to protect her and her child.”
Stella’s heart plummeted. His explanation sounded perfectly logical, but deep down, she completely refused to believe it.
She took a sharp breath, swallowing the suffocating lump in her throat. “Jarrod, if you’re just terrified for my safety, I can leave the country until this blows over, or we can figure out another strategy. You don’t have to force a divorce.”
Jarrod closed his eyes and massaged his temples. When he spoke again, every single word felt like a knife tearing her apart. “On top of the terms in our original agreement, I’ll give you another blank check.”
“Tomorrow morning, ten o’clock. See you at the courthouse.”
Without another word, Jarrod stood up and strode toward the door.
“Jarrod,” Stella called out, stopping him in his tracks.
Jarrod’s footsteps faltered.
“Think very carefully about this. If you force this divorce, I am never giving you a chance to regret it. Logan is desperately waiting for me to come back to him, and Sebastian has been waiting for this exact moment.”
Stella’s voice turned ice-cold. “They’re both incredibly devoted to me. Whether I choose my childhood sweetheart or a partner who shares all my ambitions, you will be completely out of the picture.”
Jarrod’s hand froze on the doorknob. He didn’t say a word.
“Even if everything you just said is true, are you absolutely certain you want to destroy your own marriage by taking this extreme route just to repay an old debt?” Stella demanded.
Jarrod pulled the door open. “I refuse to gamble with Yvette and her baby’s lives. This is the safest way.”
And with that, he disappeared into the hallway.
