Two doctors, one understaffed ward, and a rota that keeps putting them on the same nights. Iris has been avoiding the sixth floor since the winter she lost a patient there; Daniel transferred in three months ago and has not yet asked anyone why he left his last hospital. Between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. they hand over lives in clipped sentences, split vending-machine dinners, and learn each other's tells. Neither of them mentions the obvious. Then a bad night arrives that neither can carry alone, and the handover stops being professional.
