Stella and Summer both glanced toward the door. It was Lucca, returning with some takeout containers.
Summer immediately turned her head away, clearly refusing to look at him.
Noting her reaction, Lucca spoke, his tone laced with a mix of regret and concern. “Summer, you haven’t eaten anything since last night. I went out and got you some food.”
Summer remained completely silent.
Lucca tried again, clinging to his patience. “I know you’re furious with me, but don’t punish your own body. I got all your favorites. Just eat a little bit, okay?”
Stella was equally livid at his behavior, but knowing this was a deeply personal rift between the couple, she felt it wasn’t her place to interfere.
“I’m going to run to the restroom,” Stella announced, giving them some privacy.
Once Stella left the room, Lucca stepped closer to the bed.
He set the food down and crouched beside her. “Summer, I’m an asshole. I never should have said those awful things. I was wrong. Please, don’t be mad anymore, alright?”
Summer closed her eyes, her expression remaining entirely stoic.
“Summer, you promised me that no matter what I did wrong, you’d always give me one chance to make it right. Please, just give me that chance now.”
Perhaps from a lack of sleep, his voice was terribly hoarse, carrying a desperate edge of pleading.
A single tear escaped from the corner of Summer’s eye.
Back when things were perfect between them, spending twenty-four hours a day together had never seemed like enough. He used to hold her tightly, whispering how terrified he was of losing her.
