Sylvia and Seraphina quickly wiped away their tears and offered nervous nods of greeting to Jarrod.
Jarrod dismissed them with a chillingly blank look. The temperature in the room plummeted further. “If I hadn’t come, how would I have ever witnessed Mr. Quinn treating his biological daughter this way behind closed doors?”
The words “biological daughter” hung heavily in the air. Not just Sylvia and Seraphina, but even George looked thoroughly humiliated.
“Jarrod, I was just trying to scare her a bit. I had no intention of actually hurting her,” George lied, struggling to maintain a shred of dignity.
“So this time you were just trying to scare her. What about last time? Why exactly did you slap my wife across the face then?” Jarrod’s voice was dangerously quiet, making zero effort to hide his aggressive interrogation.
George froze in shock. He had never expected Jarrod to bring up that buried incident!
It had happened so long ago. Why was Jarrod weaponizing it now?
Stella was equally stunned. How did Jarrod even know about the slap?
And hearing him use the intimately possessive phrase “my wife” right to her family’s faces sent a strange jolt through her.
“Jarrod, that was all a massive misunderstanding.” George scrambled to recover his footing. “It was just a minor argument between a father and daughter. My emotions got the better of me… It happened ages ago. You know I’d never normally lay a finger on Stella, right?”
George shot Stella a desperate, pleading look.
Stella knew Jarrod had shown up specifically to defend her, but she had no desire to use him as a shield.
Just as George said, it was ancient history. Furthermore, the entire fight had ignited because Jarrod was photographed looking incredibly cozy with Chloe at an overseas airport.
She and George had fought over it, Sylvia had intervened with fake concern, Stella shoved Sylvia away, and George had slapped her in retaliation.
