Jarrod had previously claimed there was nothing going on between him and Chloe, insisting he was merely playing along with her charade. Yet, he had never bothered to change her exclusive ringtone.
Stella’s lips twitched in a faint, cynical smile as she made to stand up, fully intending to give him privacy for his call.
“Where are you going?” Jarrod demanded, his brow furrowing instantly.
“I don’t want to interrupt your call,” Stella replied smoothly.
“Sit down and eat.”
Without missing a beat, Jarrod decisively rejected the call.
Seeing this, Stella remained in her seat, picked up her fork, and resumed eating.
Seconds later, the phone blared again. It was Chloe, nothing if not persistent.
“You should answer it. What if it’s an emergency?” Stella pointed out mildly.
Jarrod’s frown deepened. He swiped to answer and immediately put it on speaker.
“Jarrod! What exactly have you been so busy with lately?! You ignore my texts, you reject my calls, and when I went to The Fuller Group, security blocked me from going up to your office!”
Chloe’s furious, whining voice flooded the room the second the line connected.
“What do you want?” Jarrod asked coldly.
“Do I need a reason to talk to you?” Chloe sounded deeply aggrieved. “Do you know how long it’s been since you spent time with me? I asked my brother, I asked Julian, and they all said you were swamped with business abroad! But Serena told me you’ve been back in the country for ages!”
“You’re not busy with work at all! You’re just running around dealing with Stella and her sick grandmother!”
“Chloe—”
“Am I not even allowed to be a little jealous of her?!”
Sensing the dangerous drop in Jarrod’s tone, Chloe immediately backpedaled. “Jarrod, I’m sorry. I was wrong, okay? I won’t say things like that again.”
Perhaps surprised by her unusually quick surrender, Jarrod swallowed the harsh warning he had been about to deliver.
